Auto Dealer Service Personnel

When you visit your local car dealership to get your car fixed, you're likely to see many people working busily. What may not be clear, however, is what each person does to make sure you get your car back as quickly as possible.

The first person you meet, and with whom you'll probably shake hands, is the greeter. You may not know where to go when you get to the dealership, but the greeter does. He or she will direct you to the proper service adviser for your particular car problem. Once you're seated at the desk, the adviser will ask you why you're in for a repair. Then, he or she will write up a work order, have you sign it, giving the dealership the authority to complete the repair, collect your keys, and give you a timeframe for the repair's completion.

The adviser will hand off the keys to the lot porter, whose job is to make sure your car gets to the appropriate repair bay. In many cases, the lot porter will also clean the car, toss out any trash you've left inside, and possibly put gas in the car too. If your repair is going to take a long time, particularly if it's going to be more than one day, dealerships also offer a complimentary shuttle service that can take you where you need to go.

Once your car is delivered to the proper bay, the technician assigned to repair it will begin work. Many times, while working on your car, he or she will discover other problems that need attention. Should this be the case, the technician will come back to the service adviser, who will ask you if you want the repair done or not. If you're not there, obviously, the adviser will contact you by phone.

If your car needs parts to complete the repair, you'll get to meet the person at the parts counter. Sometimes, the dealership will offer "gently-used" parts for a discount rate for nonessential components. It will be up to you whether or not you choose new or used parts.

Once the repair is complete, the booker will "do the math." You'll be responsible for the cost of any parts, the hourly rate for labor at the dealership, and any environmental fees, such as for the disposal of oil or tires, and any other such incidental costs at the time the repairs are done. If you have a service contract or warranty, it might also cover some or all of the costs of the repair. If your repair is part of a recall of any type, the repairs will be gratis. Your final stop will be the cashier. Whether the lot porter has washed your car or not, it'll be in a staging area, ready to go.
